Stuart Varney focuses on New York City Mayor Zohran Mamdani’s campaign to make New York a socialist stronghold. Mamdani supports three progressive House candidates, including Daria Alisa, who advocates for free childcare, free college, and dismantling ICE. At 34, Mamdani seems to aim for leadership akin to Bernie Sanders.
Although Mamdani and Donald Trump aren’t on the ballot, their influence will be tested in primary elections across New York, Maryland, Utah, and South Carolina. Trump’s endorsement strategy in South Carolina supports both candidates in the GOP gubernatorial race aiming to replace Gov. Henry McMaster.
Mamdani is challenging party norms after winning the Democratic primary, becoming New York City’s mayor at a young age. His backed candidates contest against established Democratic figures. Among them is Darializa Avila Chevalier, who tries to unseat Rep. Adriano Espaillat in New York’s 13th District. Chevalier, at 32, views a win as a crucial step in building a socialist movement nationwide. She faces Espaillat, who enjoys support from established party figures like New York Gov. Kathy Hochul.
Another candidate, former Comptroller Brad Lander, challenges Rep. Dan Goldman in New York’s 10th District. Goldman is backed by prominent figures such as Nancy Pelosi. State Assembly Member Claire Valdez competes in New York’s 7th District, against Antonio Reynoso, supported by Nydia Velazquez.
Mamdani, Valdez, and Chevalier, as Democratic Socialists of America members, emphasize moral clarity, particularly on Israel. Mamdani critiqued AIPAC, referring to them as ‘monsters.’ Mamdani, at a rally with Bernie Sanders, insisted on change within the Democratic Party.
The outcome will either bolster Mamdani’s influence or challenge his position. Mamdani’s popularity has grown, even garnering compliments from Trump, who previously criticized him sharply. Mamdani’s appeal expanded, uniting critics and allies within the Democratic Party.
Mamdani’s candidates promote affordability amidst high living costs. His collaboration with Sanders offers Republicans opportunities to challenge Democrats, positioning Mamdani’s socialist focus as a liability.
Trump backs South Carolina candidates Alan Wilson and Pamela Evette for the GOP gubernatorial nomination. His dual support resembles past strategies, designed to maintain influence. South Carolina’s runoff will test Trump’s sway within the GOP.
In New York, primary contests shape significant political dynamics. Leaving his district open, Nadler’s retirement invites competition among prominent Democratic candidates. Incumbents and newcomers navigate these transitions, influencing the forthcoming general election cycles.
In Utah and Maryland, evolving political landscapes present challenges and opportunities. Candidates will navigate newly drawn districts and strategize for political survival amidst growing partisan divides.
