A search is in progress after a student at Pennsylvania State University was fatally shot on Saturday, possibly in an armed robbery attempt. Billy Schmidt, 22, was killed near his home in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania, around 1:30 a.m. Officers found him with a gunshot wound to his chest, and he was pronounced dead at a local hospital shortly after.
According to his father, Bill Schmidt, Billy was returning from a bar where he had been watching the NBA Finals with friends. Security footage shows Billy asking for his phone back before being shot multiple times. An individual is seen throwing a cellphone, and Billy is shown chasing the person before he is shot.
Billy Schmidt was a senior at Penn State, set to graduate in December. His father described him as a kind person who never caused harm. The investigation is ongoing, and no arrests have been made. A neighbor has called for anyone with information to assist the police, emphasizing the importance of justice for Billy’s death.
His sister, Anna Schmidt, noted in a GoFundMe campaign that Billy was a cherished brother, friend, and community member. The campaign has raised over $48,000 since the incident.
