Miguel Vargas’ Path to All-Star Status

Cleveland — Miguel Vargas had a challenging year in 2024. “It’s hard at the time, at the moment, I was processing,” Vargas shared on Saturday. He struggled to find joy on the field. Now, as an All-Star third baseman, things have changed.

Vargas acknowledged the support of his teammates. “They have been helping me,” Vargas explained. “They carried me to this point, and I cannot be more glad to be part of this group.” On June 23, 2026, he hit a solo home run against the Cleveland Guardians at Rate Field.

Vargas will represent the Chicago White Sox in the American League roster at the All-Star Game on July 14 in Philadelphia. The roster announcements were made Saturday evening. “It means a lot,” Vargas stated. “I put a lot of hard work in there, and it’s great to see some payoff.” He expressed gratitude to represent his team. Vargas becomes the first Sox third baseman to make the All-Star team since Joe Crede in 2008, joining a distinguished group that includes Robin Ventura, Bill Melton, George Kell, and Jimmy Dykes.

Manager Will Venable expressed his happiness for Vargas. “You’re not supposed to have favorites,” Venable noted, “but I’m a big fan of Vargy.” Venable praised Vargas for his character and contributions beyond his on-field performance.

Vargas entered Saturday’s game against the Cleveland Guardians with a .248/.359/.495 slash line, including 20 home runs and 55 RBIs in 86 games. His 3.2 fWAR ranks 18th in MLB and 13th among position players.

Reflecting on his journey, Vargas said, “It’s a long way for me, a couple of years ago, I had a lot of tough moments.” In 2024, after joining the Sox from the Los Angeles Dodgers, he hit .104 in 42 games. Improving gradually, he hit .234 with 16 home runs and 60 RBIs last season. This year, he leads third basemen in runs (58) and walks (51), tying for first in RBIs, ranking second in home runs, OPS (.854), and slugging, and third in weighted runs created plus (138).

Venable recalled Vargas’ development. “We saw stretches in 2025,” Venable said. “We talked about it where he tapped into some good stuff, but it fluctuated.” Vargas dedicated himself to improving both physically and technically in the offseason.

Venable expressed displeasure that more Sox players weren’t named to the AL roster. “I’m like pissed about it,” Venable commented. He believes several players deserved recognition. Though he acknowledges the team’s collaborative contributions, he hopes for deserving players to be named as replacements.

Venable described Vargas as “a special guy.” He noted Vargas’ unique approach to the game, combining competitiveness and ease.

Vargas’ All-Star selection is a milestone. He thanked his teammates, front office, coaching staff, and Chicago fans for their support. “This is a great moment for my family as well,” Vargas shared. “I know how important this is for them too.” He looks forward to sharing the honor with them.
