3 days ago 0

A council member in New Jersey, who previously admitted to being involved in organized crime, has been arrested for extortion among other charges. John Alite, aged 63, serves as a councilman in Englishtown, NJ, and was charged this past Friday. The charges against him include multiple counts of extortion and corporate misconduct, according to New Jersey’s Attorney General.

Authorities have accused Alite of providing loans at rates exceeding the legal limit, followed by threats of violence to ensure repayment. Alite allegedly used his company, Straightened-Out Entertainment, Inc., as a front for these operations. The Attorney General, Jennifer Davenport, emphasized the comprehensive investigative collaboration between the Division of Criminal Justice and New Jersey State Police.

Davenport stated, “These arrests are the result of rigorous investigative work and the strong cooperation between the Division of Criminal Justice and New Jersey State Police, who work tirelessly every day in the pursuit of justice. Our office is dedicated to ensuring that all businesses conduct themselves fairly and lawfully. The conduct alleged in this case was anything but, and we will work to hold those who cheat and steal accountable.”

John Alite’s history with organized crime is well-documented. He was a top enforcer for the notorious Gotti crime family and associated with the Gambino family. In 2015, Alite spoke with CBS News, discussing his decision to leave the mob life behind. He claimed involvement in 15 murders, numerous shootings, and assaults with weapons such as pipes and baseball bats.

Alite recounted an organized hit, saying, “While we were in the conversation, I shot him two or three times in the head, then spit on him. It was nothing, like going to a baseball game, I went out [afterward] for a cheeseburger, double cheese, Coke and fries.”

Alite served more than 14 years incarcerated across the United States and Brazil. Following his release, he renounced his mob connections. He later created a podcast, “Catch Me On The Run,” to share insights about his criminal past and experiences evading authorities. He has participated in various books and documentaries.

Alite was appointed to his council position by Englishtown’s mayor, Daniel Francisco, in May 2025. He expressed a desire to serve the community, especially following personal tragedy, the death of his daughter due to a fentanyl overdose. At the time, Alite remarked, “Plus, I’m not a criminal any more. I’m on a mission to do things the right way.”
