New UK PM Andy Burnham and US-UK Relations Under Scrutiny

British Ambassador Sir Christian Turner recently spoke with Sandra Smith about the new UK Prime Minister, Andy Burnham, and his policies. Turner noted Burnham’s focus on economic growth and reindustrialization, emphasizing the importance of British jobs and UK strength. The conversation also covered key issues like preventing Iran from developing nuclear weapons and ensuring open straits.

The UK plans to announce restrictions on trade with Israeli settlements in the West Bank, causing concern among US and Israeli officials. The US State Department is closely monitoring these developments. The proposed measures include an embargo on goods and services from West Bank settlements, increasing pressure on Israel under Burnham’s leadership.

According to reports, these measures are expected to be announced shortly after Burnham’s phone call with President Donald Trump. During their conversation, Burnham emphasized the need for a two-state solution in the Middle East, advocating for an independent Palestinian state alongside Israel.

Downing Street confirmed the UK’s commitment to peace and security in the region, focusing on the two-state solution. Although the planned sanctions were not mentioned in the call’s readout, Bloomberg suggested Burnham might have discussed them with Trump.

This development could lead to tension between Burnham and the Trump administration, which has shown strong support for Israel. UK Foreign Secretary Ed Miliband is expected to formally announce the new measures. He has called for a comprehensive reset of Britain’s policy towards Israeli settlements, responding to settlement expansions like the E1 project, considered a longstanding red line.

The sanction plans have drawn criticism in Israel and the US. Israeli Finance Minister Bezalel Smotrich suggested expelling the British ambassador, expressing frustration at the perceived hostility towards Israel from the UK government. National Security Minister Itamar Ben-Gvir proposed that Israel should recognize Argentine sovereignty over the Falkland Islands in retaliation.

In the US, Representative Randy Fine indicated that the measures might conflict with Florida’s anti-boycott law, affecting British businesses. Meanwhile, Burnham has aligned with leaders from other countries like Canada, France, Germany, and Italy in condemning Israeli settlement expansions that threaten the prospects for a Palestinian state.
