2 hours ago 0

Bill Belichick achieved a milestone victory as North Carolina’s head coach. The team defeated No. 25 Pitt 21-17 at Acrisure Stadium. This victory marks Belichick’s first win against a ranked team while leading UNC.

This win is UNC’s first over a ranked opponent since defeating No. 25 Miami in 2023. It is also the first road victory over a ranked opponent since their triumph over No. 9 Miami in 2020.

Gutsy performance. Kept battling against a good football team.

Belichick shared his thoughts during ESPN’s postgame broadcast.

The game began with North Carolina’s team trailing 10-0. The comeback started in the second quarter when quarterback Billy Edwards Jr. connected with tight end Jelani Thurman for a 7-yard touchdown pass, making the score 10-7.

North Carolina took its first lead late in the third quarter. Demon June’s 1-yard touchdown run put them ahead at 14-10. Pitt quickly responded. Running back La’Vell Wright capped a seven-play, 75-yard drive with a 1-yard touchdown, regaining a 17-14 lead for Pitt.

UNC didn’t waste time striking back. Edwards delivered a 75-yard touchdown pass to Shamar Easter on the first play of the next possession. This score put UNC ahead 21-17, a lead they maintained for the rest of the game.

With this win, North Carolina now has a 3-2 record. A victory against archrival Duke next could match last season’s total wins of four. Pitt now stands at 5-1 and will prepare to face Boston College in its upcoming game.
