Northwest Indiana’s Rocky Horror Troupe Honors Tim Curry

The Northwest Indiana Rocky Horror troupe continues its tradition with a performance that pays homage to the late Tim Curry. Known for his role as Dr. Frank-N-Furter in ‘The Rocky Horror Show,’ Curry passed away at 80 in Los Angeles on August 25.

Tim Curry’s Impact

Tim Curry’s career, spanning various genres, included notable films like ‘Clue,’ ‘Muppet Treasure Island,’ ‘Annie,’ and ‘Home Alone 2: Lost in New York.’ He gained further recognition playing Pennywise in the 1990 television adaptation of Stephen King’s ‘It’ and received three Tony nominations.

John Davey, the leader of Rocky Horror in Abundance, expressed disbelief at Curry’s passing, stating, “He was Dr. Frank-N-Furter. He shaped my entire life.” The Saturday performance, set to honor Curry, includes a SpongeBob-themed crossover, a creative twist the group has prepared for months.

A Community in Tribute

Holly Schulz, cast member and social media manager, shared plans for a moving tribute. Cast elder Ryan “T.R.” Mix anticipates fans dressing as their favorite Curry characters. Mix highlighted Curry’s influence on those drawn to the Rocky Horror community, many of whom find camaraderie and confidence through the experience.

The Rocky Horror in Abundance troupe, comprising about 40 members aged 18 to 67, values inclusion and self-expression, inspired by Curry’s performances.

Curry’s Legacy

Curry, who survived a stroke in 2012, once reflected on his Rocky Horror doubts during a theater appearance. Seeing the passion of the fans moved him to tears. His 2025 memoir, ‘Vagabond,’ mentions how interactions with fans motivated him to share his story.

Davey recalled how the movie and community transformed his life, introducing him to new ideas and lifelong friendships. He emphasized how wearing the Dr. Frank-N-Furter costume, crafted by his mother, bolstered his self-esteem.

The Troupe’s Journey

Originally performing at the Loew’s Theater in Merrillville, the troupe has moved venues over the years, currently residing at Avenue 912 in Griffith. Their mission is to honor Curry’s legacy and ensure the show’s continued impact on diverse audiences.

Despite the role’s challenges, Curry’s portrayal of Frank-N-Furter has left an indelible mark. Schulz noted his ability to help individuals embrace their true selves. As the troupe looks forward to their tribute event on September 24, Curry’s legacy continues to inspire and unite fans.
