Ocasio-Cortez Faces Backlash for Remarks on Socialist Ideology

Rep. Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez, a leading figure within the Democratic Party from New York, dismissed some aspects of her and other socialist politicians’ rhetoric as outdated. Conservative opponents remain skeptical, however.

During an appearance on ABC’s ‘This Week,’ Ocasio-Cortez addressed questions from host Jon Karl. He referred to controversial past comments from Wisconsin gubernatorial candidate Francesca Hong. These comments included calls to cancel Thanksgiving and abolish prisons, positions she has since moderated.

Ocasio-Cortez said with a laugh, ‘I have a local city councilman that says, Woke 1 was crazy.’ She emphasized the importance of evaluating current statements from candidates.

This perspective did not go unchallenged. Tim Graham, from the Media Research Center, told Fox News Digital that claiming past remarks are irrelevant today is unconvincing. He noted that Hong criticized holidays such as Valentine’s Day, the Fourth of July, Halloween, and found Christmas unsettling.

‘Once a radical Democrat wins a primary,’ Graham explained, ‘strategists often reposition them as moderates to appeal to less politically-engaged voters.’ He argued that past tweets from Hong reveal a temperament not suited for leadership.

Manhattan Institute Vice President Jesse Arm posed critical questions regarding which elements of ‘Woke 1’ Ocasio-Cortez found extreme. He cited diverse topics like sex-change operations for children, biological men in women’s sports, and open borders among others.

Arm indicated that leftist leaders have not publicly disowned these ideas nor shown intent to. He criticized them for dismissing early 2020s ideological extremes without admitting their complicity or clarifying current positions.

In 2019, Ocasio-Cortez warned about climate change doomsdays, yet now considers starting a family in the 2030s. Arm remarked, ‘It’s good she anticipates a future, but it’s more vital politicians acknowledge past alarmism was perilous.’

Responses also surfaced on social media. Rep. Brandon Gill, from Texas, argued that politicians promoting division and DEI across institutions could not downplay backlash to their agenda.

Florida Governor Ron DeSantis claimed victory against ‘woke’ ideology, asserting acknowledgment of its flaws by prominent leftists.

Conservative analyst Ryan James Girdusky commented that ‘Woke 1 was crazy’ now becomes a convenient dodge for previously extreme stances.
