Pete Buttigieg’s Call for Change in U.S. Political Institutions

Former Transportation Secretary Pete Buttigieg recently voiced the need for significant changes in U.S. political institutions. During an appearance on ‘America Reports,’ Buttigieg shared his thoughts on the previous administration’s decisions regarding Iran, highlighting potential impacts on foreign policy and national security.

Buttigieg also expressed concern about the state of political institutions in the United States, focusing on democratic norms, balance of power, and government roles in addressing domestic and international issues.

His remarks drew criticism, especially when he sidestepped questions about the Democratic Socialists of America’s policies, such as abolishing the Senate and ending deportations. Instead, he emphasized disagreements within his party, stating, “There’s always going to be some people in my party who go too far for me.”

In an apparent attempt to define his unique stance, Buttigieg called himself a “Buttigieg Democrat.” He insisted on the common ground among Democrats, despite the presence of radical views from some members.

A recent poll shows Buttigieg in close competition with Rep. Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez for a potential 2028 race. Ocasio-Cortez has also engaged in discussions about proposals to abolish the Senate, labeling it a “constitutional question.”

When asked about his position within the Democratic spectrum, Buttigieg avoided classic party labels, describing himself as having “common sense” ideas. However, this evasiveness towards confronting the more socialist elements of his party prompted criticism from figures like Reince Priebus, a former RNC chairman.

Priebus claimed that Buttigieg’s actions reflected a broader alignment of mainstream Democrats with those on the political fringe. He pointed to recent successes of Democratic socialists in primary elections as evidence of this shift.

Despite speculation about his potential presidential run, Buttigieg clarified his current focus on supporting others in the upcoming election, emphasizing the importance of issues like gas prices and healthcare.
