Pilot Survives Emergency Water Landing in Boca Raton

On August 22, a single-engine aircraft piloted by 23-year-old Faith Tenkley made an emergency landing in the Atlantic Ocean just off the coast of Boca Raton, Florida. This remarkable feat of aviation drew considerable attention, both for the skill displayed and the successful avoidance of beachgoers and paddleboarders.

Prior to landing, Tenkley focused on ensuring the safety of everyone nearby. She steered her aircraft toward open water, managing to avoid all nearby buildings and individuals, including paddleboarders and swimmers. Her commendable actions prompted praise from local authorities.

“During the descent, my primary focus was ensuring the safety of everyone around me,” Tenkley stated to Fox News regarding the incident.

Videos shared on social media depicted the smooth water landing and captured onlookers’ astonishment. Interestingly, the footage also showed a man with a metal detector continuing his beach treasure hunt, seemingly unfazed by the situation unfolding nearby.

Tenkley initially planned to land at Boca Raton Airport but decided against it due to landing gear failure and concern about a hard landing with a fuel-laden plane. After air traffic control cleared her for landing, she chose the ocean for safety reasons.

She expressed gratitude for the support received following the incident, acknowledging lifeguards, firefighters, police officers, and witnesses for their rapid assistance.

“I want to extend my thanks to ATC for being prepared, as well as the lifeguards, firefighters, and police officers,” she added in her statement.

Faith Tenkley, an experienced pilot with four years of flying under her belt, was on a flight from Fort Myers, Florida, to Bimini, Bahamas when her plane encountered mechanical issues. Initially intending to divert to Boca Raton Airport, Tenkley faced a malfunctioning landing gear and engine failure about 15 miles west of Boca Raton.

The aftermath, captured on video, showed the airplane’s tail protruding from the ocean. As Tenkley navigated toward the coast, she successfully guided her disabled aircraft to a safer water landing site.

Beachgoers filmed the plane descending low over the Boca Raton beach before it gently landed on the ocean’s surface. Following the landing, Tenkley swam away from the intact aircraft with lifeguard assistance, dressed in a bikini, having shed her skirt for the swim.

Authorities quickly responded; a rescue boat from Boca Raton Ocean Rescue arrived promptly. Tenkley was transported to a hospital as a precaution and found to be unharmed.
