Donald Trump will mark a first for a sitting U.S. president by attending an NBA Finals game, resulting in stringent security steps at Madison Square Garden. This heightened security led to sizable barriers and a significant wait for entry.
Hours before Trump’s arrival, the New York Police Department and U.S. Secret Service set up barriers and restricted movement around the arena. These measures were put in place more than four hours ahead of the tipoff for Game 3 between the New York Knicks and San Antonio Spurs. The atmosphere was comparable to the New Year’s Eve crowd in Times Square.
Fans were advised to arrive two hours early, providing a ticket or pass to get past checkpoints, along with undergoing a TSA-style screening. Large crowds gathered, forming long lines even before doors opened. Trump’s presence led to the cancellation of the outdoor watch party and a no-bag policy.
New Yorkers, familiar with similar lockdowns during presidential visits, were advised of restrictions. Police Commissioner Jessica Tisch explained that the Game 3 restrictions were necessary due to the presidential visit, but expected watch parties to return by Game 4.
President Trump has attended several major sporting events during his term, often leading to similar fan inconveniences. Last year’s U.S. Open men’s singles final was delayed due to security lines, resulting in many fans missing the start despite a postponed schedule.
Knicks center Mitchell Robinson showed indifference to Trump’s attendance, noting it wouldn’t affect the game. Mayor Zohran Mamdani and other officials were also expected, though some found ticket prices as high as $5,000 or more challenging. Mamdani managed to secure a standing-room-only ticket for around $1,000.
Due to the difficulty in obtaining game tickets, fans opted to gather in bars and streets across New York. The playoff watch parties near the Garden were relocated to Bryant Park due to the increased security.
Knicks guard Jose Alvarado, hailing from New York, commented on the fan adaptability, saying they would find a way to watch the game.
