Progressive Candidates Face Setbacks in Illinois Primaries

2 minutes ago 0

In the Illinois Democratic primaries, far-left candidates experienced significant losses. These candidates, supported by figures like Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez, found themselves defeated. Moderate candidates such as Mayor Daniel Biss and former Congresswoman Melissa Bean won in the 09, 08, and 02 House races.

In another primary, progressive State Senator Aisha Wahab defeated Melissa Hernandez, a moderate public transit executive, in a special election. This contest highlighted the ongoing conflict between the party’s progressive and establishment factions. Wahab had endorsements from high-profile figures like California Attorney General Rob Bonta and labor icon Dolores Huerta. Hernandez relied on super PAC funding and local endorsements.

Recently, progressives have underperformed in states like Michigan and Wisconsin. Yet, Wahab was the favorite in her race, securing 42.8% of the vote, compared to Hernandez’s 16.8%.

California employs ‘jungle primaries,’ allowing the top two vote-getters, irrespective of party affiliation, to advance. Thus, Wahab and Hernandez, both Democrats, filled the top two spots, excluding Republicans from contention.

This special election offers only a brief victory since it fills the remaining months of Swalwell’s term. The two candidates are poised to compete again in November for a full congressional term.

Although Wahab’s win is temporary, incumbents typically hold an advantage. The upcoming general election will feature California’s revised congressional map.

Some Democrats argue that recent setbacks for progressives reflect limited appeal, while others see enduring popularity among younger voters.

During their campaigns, Hernandez critiqued Wahab for ethical issues in Sacramento, while Wahab questioned Hernandez’s liberal credentials. Wahab accused Hernandez of receiving conservative funding, whereas Hernandez highlighted questionable campaign finance activities by Wahab.

The Israeli-Palestinian conflict remains a contentious issue within the Democratic Party, with progressives challenging pro-Israel Democrats.
