Anti-ICE protesters and authorities clashed outside a detention facility in New Jersey on Monday. The protesters claim illegal immigrants are housed under poor conditions at the Delaney Hall detention center in Newark. A human chain was formed by protesters, attempting to block access to buildings. New Jersey Governor Mikie Sherrill was denied entry to the facility, questioning what is being hidden from public eyes.
Governor Sherrill’s request for access to Delaney Hall faced formal denial. She expressed concerns about transparency. Advocating against private detention centers, she aims to close Delaney Hall and similar facilities proposed for expansion in New Jersey.
Increasing Tensions Amid Protests
Local reports highlight the heightened tensions. Protesters threw water and shouted at ICE agents, who detained several demonstrators. The crowd was ordered to move off the road to reduce confrontation. Chants such as “No more ICE!” and “Free them all!” echoed among protesters.
Facility Conditions Under Scrutiny
Inside the facility, detainees initiated a hunger and labor strike, citing poor living conditions and denial of medical care. Nearly 300 detainees spoke out through a letter, describing inhumane conditions marked by inadequate food and medical neglect. Acknowledging their illegal entry into the U.S., detainees expressed a sense of feeling kidnapped and psychologically tortured.
A DHS spokesperson clarified that detainees receive meals, clean water, clothing, bedding, showers, soap, and toiletries. It was emphasized that ICE detention standards surpass those of typical U.S. prisons.
Amid growing protests, family members have maintained a vigil outside the facility. Democrats, including Senator Andy Kim, are prominently present, urging the shutdown of the facility due to alleged poor conditions.
In recent remarks, Tricia McLaughlin, former DHS Assistant Secretary, described the facility as housing severe offenders, including terrorists and gang members. Calls for closure are supported by officials such as Senator Andy Kim and representatives Rob Menendez Jr., Nellie Pou, LaMonica McIver, Analilia Mejia, and Frank Pallone Jr.
