Rams Defense Faces Challenges Following Loss to 49ers

Thursday night in Australia marked a significant challenge for the Los Angeles Rams defense. Without star player Aaron Donald, the team aimed to showcase their new lineup featuring Myles Garrett, a two-time Defensive Player of the Year, and All-Pro cornerback Trent McDuffie. However, the San Francisco 49ers dominated the field, scoring 379 total yards against the Rams, who forced only one turnover and failed to record a sack. The Rams suffered a 27-7 defeat.

The defensive line, including Garrett, Kobie Turner, Braden Fiske, and Byron Young, attracted criticism for their performance. On ESPN’s “First Take,” analyst Dan Orlovsky shifted focus to defensive coordinator Chris Shula. Orlovsky expressed concern over Shula’s strategies, highlighting the Rams’ recent struggles against quarterbacks Bryce Young, Caleb Williams, Sam Darnold, and Brock Purdy. Despite possessing ample talent, the Rams defense has allowed a high QBR of 98.3 on third downs over the last four games.

The Rams concluded last season with a 12-5 record, narrowly missing the Super Bowl after a 31-27 defeat to the Seattle Seahawks in the NFC Championship Game. The team’s offense, led by MVP Matthew Stafford and All-Pro receivers Puka Nacua and Davante Adams, excelled, ranking first in total yards and points. Meanwhile, their defense was middling, allowing 327.5 total yards and 20.4 points per game.

In the playoffs, the Rams struggled, conceding 31 points to the Carolina Panthers, 17 points to the Chicago Bears, and 31 points again to the Seahawks. Historically, Kyle Shanahan has succeeded against Sean McVay, and Thursday’s game reiterated the Rams’ defensive shortcomings after their offseason adjustments.

Chris Shula, with the Rams since 2017 and their defensive coordinator since 2024, faced skepticism despite his reputation as a respected coach. His ability to innovate and maximize the assembled talent remains under scrutiny as the season progresses.
