Randy Merkin’s Journey in Sports Radio: Beyond the Glass

Working in sports radio is intense and demanding, filled with stories worthy of a book. Randy Merkin, a Deerfield native, recently released Beyond the Glass: More Stories from a Sports Radio Producer, a sequel to his initial book, Behind the Glass from 2021.

Merkin’s book covers 162 pages of his journey in the sports radio world. Starting at Homewood-Flossmoor High School, where he graduated in 1988, to his professional career. His early career began at a small radio station in Platteville, Wisconsin, earning $12,000 annually before moving to larger stations in Chicago.

Merkin, an executive producer for Audacy Corporation’s BetMGM and part of BetRivers content team, penned this collection amidst a busy schedule, offering a slightly different narrative than his first book, focusing more on personal experiences.

He shares stories on landing major sports figures and broadcasters using sheer determination. A notable event was obtaining MLB umpire Jim Joyce’s interview in June 2010, after Joyce’s call cost Armando Galarraga a perfect game. Faced with little information on Joyce’s whereabouts, Merkin managed to get his cellphone number, resulting in segments aired nationally.

Another highlighted moment was in 2014 when Merkin arranged for Mike Eruzione to be surprised by Al Michaels during a sports radio interview. Michaels was in Sochi, Russia, and a time constraint existed, yet it resulted in eight to ten minutes of engaging dialogue. Merkin described it as “a producer’s dream,” noting the seamless interaction between the two sports figures.

Merkin’s book serves not only as a collection of celebrity encounters but also as a resource on successful sports radio producing, emphasizing relationship-building and trust. He explains the media industry’s complexities and the significance of strong relationships, which apply universally across industries.

In addition to professional anecdotes, the book reflects on personal experiences, honoring influential figures in his life such as his parents, teachers, and the late Jeff Dickerson, an ESPN Radio reporter. Merkin acknowledges the ups and downs in radio, advising aspiring sports radio professionals to pursue their goals with readiness to adapt.

Merkin balances professional demands with family, alongside his wife Beth and their children, Brett and Dana. While contemplating future projects, he often reflects on his passion for sports radio dating back to high school aspirations of greatness in producing, striving for excellence akin to a legendary athlete.
