Russians in Phuket: A Temporary Community

4 weeks ago 0

Thousands of Russians left their homeland following the 2022 invasion of Ukraine, establishing a community in Phuket, Thailand. This enclave, while vibrant, carries a sense of transience.

Russian Life in Phuket

In the bustling atmosphere of a Russian-style supper club in Bang Tao, Phuket, the influence of Russian culture is evident. Phuket has become home to an estimated 30,000 Russian émigrés. Ekaterina Mittsel, one of the many who fled Russia, shares her experience of life on the island.

Mittsel frequently navigates her daughter’s busy schedule, which includes choir, gymnastics, and Russian lessons. These activities are part of their effort to maintain ties to their heritage, should they return to Russia one day.

A Preferred Destination

Russians are attracted to Phuket due to its perceived calmness compared to Bali, lower costs than Dubai, and a more welcoming atmosphere than some parts of Europe. “We see our friends here more often than we did in Moscow,” Mittsel remarked from her home, overlooking Phuket’s scenic southern coast.

Visible Russian Influence

Signs of a Russian presence are prominent across the island, well before the recent influx. Russian saunas operate despite the heat, and grocery stores stock familiar products. Aeroflot provides daily flights to Phuket, enhancing connectivity to Russia.

Russian cuisine is readily available at beachside restaurants offering dishes like cold borscht. Popular Russian musicians have also begun including Phuket in their tours.

At home in Rawai, Ekaterina’s daughter, Alisa, surrounds herself with artworks depicting Russian fairy tale characters and American cartoons. Their move from Moscow to Phuket mirrors the journeys of many others seeking community and familiarity far from home.
