Scouting America has made recent changes to its National Jamboree event, removing spaces dedicated to gay youth, women, and scouts of color. This decision follows criticism and pressure from the Pentagon regarding the organization’s diversity initiatives. Defense Secretary Pete Hegseth has labeled these initiatives as ‘woke’ policies.
The National Jamboree, which concludes on Friday in West Virginia, has historically been a site for inclusion during its gatherings. Samuel J. Aronson, an assistant scoutmaster, expressed concern: ‘In the absence of these spaces, we’re denying all that, both the safety and the fun, to thousands of young people.’
This year’s Jamboree hosts approximately 15,000 attendees, offering activities like mountain biking, kayaking, leadership programs, and educational sessions. Despite the changes, a Scouting America spokesperson mentioned the organization’s commitment to serving all youth but did not directly address the alterations to the event.
‘They basically have their thumb on the organization, threatening them under constant pressure,’ said James Dale, a gay rights activist who sued Boy Scouts of America for discrimination in the 1990s.
The longstanding partnership between the military and Scouting America is at risk. In February, an agreement was made between the two entities. However, conflicts have arisen over the details. According to a six-page document obtained by James Dale, the Pentagon is set to monitor compliance closely. Hegseth indicated that the department would evaluate the changes and would pull support if targets were not met by late August.
Many scouts have expressed disappointment. John Andrew Segebarth, a college student and Eagle Scout, felt disheartened by the agreement. Having anticipated working at this year’s LGBTQ+ space, he sees the removal of inclusive areas as a betrayal of values once promoted by Scouting America.
Another scout, Layla Grace, a transgender assistant scoutmaster, shared these sentiments. Despite initial hesitation, she decided to attend the jamboree to support others. ‘I am wearing so many rainbows on me,’ Grace stated. ‘I am being as loud as I can to do my best to hopefully make up for the lack of community spaces.’
The Pentagon and Scouting America continue to navigate these challenges as public concern mounts over the future of their partnership.
