Sean Payton Criticizes Geoff Schwartz’s Analysis of Bo Nix

Denver Broncos coach Sean Payton expressed frustration with careless sports TV analysis, especially from former NFL players. When former offensive lineman and TV analyst Geoff Schwartz provided a flawed characterization of Bo Nix, Payton responded directly.

During a recent appearance on “First Things First,” Schwartz debated Nix’s potential for a second-year improvement. Schwartz argued that Nix remained similar to his college days, describing him as consistent but unlikely to take risks with deep passes.

“I do think he just is what he is at this point. He looks like the same quarterback he was in college. He’s consistent. He’s not gonna make mistakes. But he’s not gonna push the ball down the field all that often.”

A Community Note quickly corrected Schwartz’s claim. Since the start of the 2024 season, Nix has thrown the most touchdown passes of 20-plus air yards in the NFL, totaling 19, including postseason play. This makes Schwartz’s claim difficult to support.

Sean Payton noticed Schwartz’s assessment and responded strongly. He criticized the quality of analysis by stating, “Always easy to tell who works at it and who doesn’t.” Payton’s comment highlighted the discrepancy between Schwartz’s analysis and Nix’s actual performance.

Former players are often hired for insights beyond typical debate shows. Schwartz’s claim drew attention because it misrepresented Nix’s performance. Nix’s proficiency with deep passes contradicts Schwartz’s view.

While Schwartz can question Nix’s limitations as a passer, describing him as a quarterback who rarely attempts long passes lacks statistical support. Payton’s response underscored this point.
