The SEC, led by Commissioner Greg Sankey, took decisive measures on Thursday to prevent former NFL players from joining LSU’s roster just before the regular season kick-off. This move underscores the SEC’s commitment to college athletics, advocating against the inclusion of players with professional contracts.
Historically, a strict rule prevented athletes, who had signed with professional teams, from returning to NCAA play. LSU and its head coach, Lane Kiffin, seemed to understand this mandate. Ahead of their season opener against Clemson, they decided not to include Dae’Quan Wright and Zxavian Harris in their 105-man roster.
During a broadcast on SEC Nation, ESPN analyst Paul Finebaum speculated on the seriousness of some SEC members regarding this issue. He suggested the possibility of voting LSU out of the SEC due to the incident.
“What happened has left a stain on this league,” Finebaum remarked. “While it’s unlikely, if a vote was held today, LSU’s expulsion might occur. Fans wouldn’t be upset by such an outcome.”
Finebaum criticized Kiffin, referring to him as immature, while commending Sankey for maintaining the SEC’s integrity. He praised Sankey’s actions as crucial in preventing further embarrassment for the conference.
“In a week of chaotic events, Greg Sankey emerged as a hero,” Finebaum noted. “With support from 15 presidents, he preserved the league’s integrity amid growing concerns of chaos and moral decline.”
It remains uncertain if LSU will reconsider adding Wright or Harris to its roster later in the season.
