Sen. Ruben Gallego Faces Scrutiny Over Endorsements and Personal Conduct

Senator Ruben Gallego from Arizona is encountering criticism regarding his political endorsements and personal decisions. Amid speculation about a potential 2028 presidential run, Gallego has pulled back his support for Democratic candidates facing allegations.

Recently, Gallego retracted his endorsement of Maine Senate nominee Graham Platner after an accusation of rape emerged. This decision follows the withdrawal of his backing from Eric Swalwell’s California gubernatorial campaign due to separate allegations of sexual misconduct. Both candidates have denied these charges.

“Troubling and deeply serious,” Gallego described the allegations against Platner in a public statement.

Lyndsey Fifield, Platner’s former partner, criticized Gallego for initially supporting Platner despite prior warning signs about his behavior. Fifield revealed past instances of abuse by Platner reported in The New York Times, although Platner has refuted these claims.

Despite the allegations, some Democratic figures continued backing Platner. “Pod Save America” co-host Jon Lovett stated that Democrats had to choose between Platner in the Senate or a Republican majority. Jon Favreau labeled Platner as the Democrats’ only option to defeat incumbent Sen. Susan Collins.

Gallego’s spokesperson claimed the senator acted correctly by distancing himself when the candidates’ actions conflicted with his values. Meanwhile, Sen. John Fetterman demanded apologies from those who supported Platner, emphasizing disbelief in the accusers’ stories.

Further charges against Platner arose from Jenny Racicot, who accused him of a violent incident in late 2021. Politico confirmed reviewing texts and emails corroborating her allegations. Platner again dismissed these accusations as false.

“Gallego’s judgment is troubling,” Arizona Republican state Sen. Warren Peterson remarked.

Critics have questioned Gallego’s pattern of endorsing contested figures, while Gallego insists his endorsements were based on available information at the time. Fox News contributor Jonathan Turley noted that Gallego’s changing stance reflects public sentiment and polling concerns.

Gallego also faces scrutiny regarding personal conduct, such as his 2016 divorce amidst his wife’s pregnancy. Additionally, campaign spending on family-related travel has been questioned. Gallego defended these expenses as legitimate campaign-related activities.
