Senator Cory Booker from New Jersey expressed concerns regarding the recent controversies surrounding Graham Platner, a Democratic candidate for the U.S. Senate from Maine. During an appearance on ABC’s “This Week,” he addressed issues arising from reports about Platner’s inappropriate communications with several women, despite being married.
ABC host Jonathan Karl inquired if these controversies could undermine Democratic aspirations to secure a Senate seat in Maine. Booker acknowledged his worries, stating, “Yes, I have concerns. That guy has questions to answer, and that’s what campaigns are for.” He emphasized that campaigns are intended to address such issues.
Booker also shifted the conversation toward broader concerns about the Democratic Party’s potential failure to regain Senate control in 2026. “I know that so much is riding on Democrats taking control of the Senate,” he noted. “If we do not secure enough votes, we will continue to have an out-of-control president.” Fox News Digital contacted Platner’s team for comments.
Platner’s campaign admitted to the text exchanges, confirming a Wall Street Journal report. The report mentioned that Platner’s wife, Amy Gertner, informed a campaign aide about the messages as they examined political risks. Following the viral story, Gertner released a video defending her husband.
“It makes me really angry, disappointed, and I find it really shameful that there’s a group of media outlets and people willing to spread gossip instead of discussing real issues,” Gertner stated. She highlighted Platner’s focus on healthcare, education, and childcare.
Platner’s candidacy has faced previous controversies, including a tattoo resembling a Nazi symbol and past controversial Reddit comments minimizing sexual assault. He also posted crude remarks about masturbation and claimed a wounded soldier “did not deserve to live.” Amy Gertner publicly supported her husband amidst these challenges.
