Setting the Stage for 9/11: Key Events from August 25-26, 2001

As part of this series, we recount the events leading up to September 11, 2001, detailing each day’s occurrences from 25 years ago.

August 25, 2001: Final Preparations

On August 25, 2001, significant actions took place regarding the planned terrorist attacks. At 2:12 p.m., Mohammed Atta accessed his Travelocity account. He searched for flights from Washington Dulles International Airport to Los Angeles and from Boston to Los Angeles. These flights were set to depart around 8:00 a.m. on September 11.

Two main factors influenced the choice of this date. First, it was after Labor Day, a time when most Americans, including those in the George W. Bush administration, would be back at work. This timing aimed to maximize casualties. Second, scheduling the attack on a Tuesday appealed to the hijackers because air travel was lighter, meaning fewer passengers might resist.

At 2:43 p.m., Atta created an American Airlines “AAdvantage” profile identified as #6H26L04. He reserved a business class seat on American Airlines Flight 11, leaving Boston at 7:45 a.m. Atta had meticulously studied this flight, knowing it used a Boeing 767-223ER. He had taken several test flights to understand the plane’s layout and the security protocols.

After discussions with the other hijacker pilots about their flight bookings for September 11, Atta reviewed his reservations and, three days later, paid for the flights using his VISA card. The purchase covered tickets for both himself and A. al-Omari, one of his accomplices.

August 26, 2001: Additional Bookings

On August 26, Saudi brothers Waleed and Wail al-Shehri also secured their places on the same flight. Wail purchased his ticket over the phone using a debit card, while Waleed completed the transaction online. They had joined Atta’s team after arriving from Saudi Arabia in April 2001.

Other team members included two additional “muscle men,” both Saudi citizens: Abdulaziz al-Omari and Satam al-Suqami. These men had the task of overtaking the plane. Seat selections were as follows: the al-Shehri brothers chose 2A and 2B in first class, while al-Omari took seat 8G, and al-Suqami chose seat 10B in business class. Mohammed Atta opted for seat 8D in the same section.

Security Implications

At the time, these domestic flights did not alert any intelligence agencies. None of the passengers were on international watchlists, which meant their ticket bookings went unnoticed. Security relied heavily on airport counter personnel, screening staff, and gate attendants to identify potential domestic threats.

On the next day: The narrative continues with Marwan al-Shehhi sharing accommodations with Mohammed Atta in Florida. Their activities included visits to several stores, and a motel manager ignoring typical protocols in their favor.
