Shaquille O’Neal Clarifies Comments on Knicks’ Championship

NBA legend Shaquille O’Neal recently clarified his remarks regarding the New York Knicks’ championship success. He emphasized that luck played a role in their win.

When questioned about his previous statement, Shaq corrected the interviewer. “That’s not what I said. I said, ‘Luck was involved,'” he noted. He elaborated by saying, “What if [OG Anunoby] don’t get the tip? What if [DeAaron Fox] held the ball back? That’s luck.”

Shaq explained that luck is a component of winning championships. He shared, “Everybody needs luck to win the championship. I started off by saying two of my championships were lucky.” He challenged Knicks fans, expressing, “Run it back,” urging them to prove themselves again next season.

Looking back on his career, Shaq won four NBA titles. He achieved a three-peat with Kobe Bryant and the Los Angeles Lakers from 2000 to 2002. In their 2000 run, the Lakers faced the Indiana Pacers. Shaq fouled out in Game 4, but Bryant’s free throws and Reggie Miller’s missed shot helped secure the win.

Shaq’s fourth title came with the Miami Heat in 2006. Paired with young star Dwyane Wade, they clashed with Dirk Nowitzki and the Dallas Mavericks. After dropping the first two games, Miami narrowly escaped Game 3 with a victory. They continued their momentum, winning the series 4-2 amid controversy over a potential violation by Wade.

The Knicks also had fortunate moments in their Finals victory over the San Antonio Spurs. Yet, their determination and resilience shone through as they fought back from significant deficits.

OG Anunoby’s timely tip-in and DeAaron Fox’s decision-making were described as lucky. However, these plays required skill and awareness. While some saw mistakes by the Spurs, others acknowledged the Knicks’ defensive efforts.
