Sophie Cunningham Sparks Debate in Women’s Sports

Sophie Cunningham remains a figure of controversy in the world of sports, alternately admired and criticized by fans and activists. This fact became evident during a recent match in Portland, where the Indiana Fever faced off against the Portland Fire, one of the WNBA’s latest expansion teams.

Cunningham’s outspoken support for maintaining women’s sports as exclusive to female athletes has mobilized women’s sports advocates to rally at her games. The first such demonstration in Seattle faced moderate opposition from trans rights supporters. Notably, a co-owner of the Seattle Storm, Celeste Keaton, who was later fined and suspended, reprimanded teenage girls courtside wearing XX-XY Athletics T-shirts that expressed gratitude to Cunningham. Additionally, an incident involving Nordstrom’s local store director, Marco Esquivel, berating these supporters has yet to receive a company response.

On July 28, 2026, the ‘With Love Is Truth’ series was inaugurated by Women Are Real, women’s rights advocate Amy E. Sousa, and journalist Brandi Kruse. This series began with a rally before the Indiana Fever’s game against the Seattle Storm at Climate Pledge Arena. Demonstrators included local supporters and Washington high school athletes, vocalizing unity with female athletes and Sophie Cunningham.

We are here today [in Portland] in solidarity with those girls [who were berated in Seattle], in solidarity with Sophie Cunningham, and in solidarity with all female athletes.

Sousa’s speech in Portland gathered dozens of individuals associated with her, including former Olympian Inga Thompson and attorney Kara Dansky. Another wave of supporters joined their cause before the game.

During her address, Sousa described Cunningham as “a voice of reason” amidst the debate over trans inclusion in women’s sports. An interruption occurred from a counter-protester wearing a “Protect Trans Kids” shirt. The shirt symbolizes a commitment to using both support and active resistance to safeguard trans youth.

At the Moda Center, while Cunningham supporters faced a dozen counter-protesters, dialogue proved challenging. Many trans rights supporters expressed disinterest in discussing the inclusion of men in women’s sports. Some interactions were tense, highlighting how divisive Cunningham’s stance has become.

Inside the arena, Cunningham faced significant opposition from the Portland fans. Boos accompanied her every appearance on court. The Portland Fire highlighted their support for transgender and gay pride movements, with flags prominently displayed by the fans.

Amid the heightened tensions, Cunningham remained resolute in her beliefs. She commented, “I’m here to play basketball, but I’m also here to be me, and I’m not going to dim my light just because maybe people don’t agree with that.”

The environment in the arena further demonstrated a divided audience, with various gestures and apparel showcasing support for trans rights and opposition to Cunningham’s stance. Despite the boos, Cunningham continued to play her game.
