Stanford Students Protest Commencement Speaker Sundar Pichai

1 week ago 0

Hundreds of Stanford University students left their commencement ceremony in protest on Sunday. The demonstration targeted Sundar Pichai, CEO of Google and Alphabet, who was the event’s speaker.

Local reports indicated that around 200 students exited as Pichai took the stage. They walked out before he began his speech. Some participants waved Palestinian flags during the protest.

The protest seemingly opposed Google’s role in “Project Nimbus,” a $1.2 billion cloud collaboration with Amazon linked to the Israeli government. Announced in 2021, this deal has drawn criticism from those opposed to Israel’s policies.

Standford University is no stranger to anti-Israel demonstrations during commencement events. This trend continued with the protest against Pichai’s speech.

Despite the protest, Pichai’s speech avoided contentious topics like global conflicts and artificial intelligence. This differed from former Google CEO Eric Schmidt’s recent address at the University of Arizona, where he faced jeers over AI discussion. Instead, Pichai emphasized optimism.

“This might not ring true to you at this moment,” Pichai remarked. “The world is going through a lot: global conflicts, economic anxiety, a rewiring of technology, information overload, all at a fast pace. It’s easy to look at the news of the day and think that we’re living in uniquely challenging times.”

He urged graduates to focus on the positive, noting, “We don’t get to choose the world we graduate into, but we do get to choose how we frame our circumstances.”

Stanford has a history of speaker protests. Last year, graduates protested against swimmer Katie Ledecky’s commencement address over similar concerns about Israel.

In a related event in 2024, anti-Israel agitators occupied the Stanford president’s office, leading to vandalism. These incidents illustrate the tensions on campus regarding this issue.
