Suspect in White House Area Shooting Identified

A shooting incident took place near the White House, resulting in the death of the gunman, identified as Nasire Best, 21, from Maryland. The gunman allegedly opened fire at a Secret Service checkpoint on Saturday evening. President Donald Trump was inside the White House at the time, engaged in Iran peace talks.

ABC News correspondent Selina Wang was reporting on the North Lawn when the gunfire erupted, capturing the event as it unfolded. Wang’s video, which has gained over 10.5 million views, shows her taking cover amid the chaos.

According to the Secret Service, the shooting began around 6 p.m. near 17th Street and Pennsylvania Avenue NW. Secret Service officers responded by shooting the suspect, who later died at a local hospital. A bystander was also wounded, though further details about this injury remain unclear. No Secret Service personnel were harmed in the exchange.

President Trump, safe inside the White House, reacted by praising law enforcement for their swift actions to neutralize the threat. In a message on Truth Social, Trump noted the incident as a reminder of the importance of White House security. Trump also referenced an earlier event, the White House Correspondents’ Dinner shooting, to emphasize security needs.

The FBI and other federal agencies are involved in the ongoing investigation. FBI Director Kash Patel confirmed federal assistance to the Secret Service and assured timely public updates. ABC News has not made an official comment regarding the incident.
