Two foreign nationals lost their lives, and two others sustained injuries due to a suspected electrical leak in a hotel swimming pool in Bengaluru, India. The tragedy occurred at the Conrad Bengaluru on Friday, October 30, as reported by the police.

Seemant Kumar Singh, the police commissioner of Bengaluru, mentioned ongoing investigations into the incident. Authorities suspect an electrical leak but await detailed reports from medical, technical, and expert sources to establish the cause.

As part of the investigation, officials secured the pool area. Inquiries have been made to Hilton Worldwide Holdings, the parent company of Conrad Hotels, for further details.

The unfortunate incident claimed the lives of Alexander Maximilian Theiss, a 57-year-old German national and Lufthansa crew member, and Juraj Horvat, a 45-year-old Slovakian who worked as a project manager for IBM. Both were guests at the hotel at the time.

Additionally, Mathew Desantis, a 41-year-old American guest, and Rahul Tiwari, a 28-year-old pool attendant and lifeguard, suffered injuries while trying to aid the victims. Desantis experienced a headache and shock but remains in stable condition, as does Tiwari. Doctors plan to examine Tiwari for potential fractures following complaints of pain.

All four individuals were transported to Manipal Hospital in the aftermath of the incident. Reports indicate that Theiss was already deceased upon arrival, and Horvat passed away despite resuscitation efforts.

Lufthansa confirms with deep sadness the passing of our crew member following an accident on Friday (30 October 2026) during a layover in Bengaluru. Our deepest sympathies go out to the family, relatives, and friends of the deceased crew member.

Meanwhile, Theiss’ wife has lodged a police complaint accusing negligence, stating that the victims were shocked while attempting to escape the pool, resulting in their deaths.

The investigations are examining the pool’s pump, underwater lighting, and earthing lines. Preliminary findings suggest the underwater lighting system as a potential source of the electrical fault. However, official confirmation is pending.

The hotel expressed its condolences and is assisting authorities, noting that a definitive cause has yet to be determined. Conrad Bengaluru has scheduled pool maintenance from October 31 to November 30, with no confirmation on whether the closure is related to this incident.

Bengaluru, known as Karnataka’s capital, is lauded as India’s Silicon Valley due to its thriving IT industry. The unfortunate accident has cast a shadow over this bustling tech hub.
