A 16-year-old girl in Tennessee has been criminally charged after an incident during a middle school football game that was captured in a viral video. The confrontation happened Tuesday night during a match between South Middle School and Cornersville Middle School at Franklin County High School.
As South Middle School scored a touchdown, officials threw penalty flags for actions occurring away from the main play. During this time, the girl unexpectedly appeared on the field and tackled a player from South Middle School. After the player got up, she pushed him back to the ground.
Coaches and players intervened to separate her from the South athlete. According to Franklin County Sheriff’s Office, the fan ran onto the field and tackled the player. The referees decided to end the game, clearing the field to prevent further incidents. The event ended without injuries.
The 16-year-old suspect was released to her parents and faces charges of assault and disorderly conduct. She has received a permanent ban from all Franklin County School properties and cannot attend Cornersville games for the next year.
At the time of the incident, the game was in the third quarter. South Middle School was awarded a 35-0 victory.
