During the latest NATO summit, President Donald Trump asserted that the United States’ relationship with Turkey was thriving. This comes despite ongoing concerns over the F-35 military aircraft program. Meanwhile, Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu has criticized Turkey for allegedly supporting Hamas.

The Wall Street Journal’s Olivia Beavers highlighted Republican unease with Trump’s approach. There is growing concern about altering the balance of power in the Middle East.

Israeli Defense Minister Israel Katz warned Erdoğan that Israel would not tolerate threats to its security. “Israel will not allow any actor to threaten its security,” Katz stated, referencing recent actions in Syria.

The backdrop includes Israel’s recent airstrike on Syria’s Abu al-Duhur Airbase. This has heightened tensions between Turkey, a NATO member, and Israel. Each side accuses the other of destabilizing the region. Turkey’s government has dismissed Israeli claims as unfounded. Official statements argue that Israel’s actions aim to legitimize airstrikes into Syrian territories.

The U.S. has sought to mediate, with Ambassador Mike Huckabee noting attempts at de-escalation. Although there is no imminent threat of confrontation, Huckabee acknowledged concerns over Turkey’s southern movements in Syria.

Additionally, Tom Barrack, the U.S. special envoy for Syria, warned Ankara it had not been informed about the Israeli strike. He emphasized the need for a better communication mechanism to avoid conflicts.

Sinan Ciddi from the Foundation for Defense of Democracies provided analysis, indicating Turkey views the Israeli-Turkish tension through its political lens. Ciddi mentioned Turkey’s actions in Syria are seen by Israel as escalation, impacting regional dynamics.
