Each year, some players who went abroad to play baseball in Japan or Korea seek to return to Major League Baseball in North America. This season, Detroit Tigers pitcher Drew Anderson stands out among those who returned in 2026 after playing in Asia. What was initially a wise move for a potential contender now holds significant implications for the approaching trade deadline on August 3.
Drew Anderson, 32, currently holds a 2-2 record with a 3.62 ERA in 19 games for the Tigers. Over 37.1 innings, he struck out 46 batters. Given his $7 million salary for 2026 and a $10 million team option for 2027, he represents a good return on investment.
When Anderson signed with the Tigers last December, he aimed to apply what he learned in the Korean Baseball Organization (KBO) back in MLB. Previously, he played for the Philadelphia Phillies, Texas Rangers, and Chicago White Sox between 2017 and 2021. Returning to Detroit also offered him a chance to contribute to a potential playoff run, following consecutive American League Division Series appearances in 2024 and 2025.
“I was definitely hoping to come back,” Anderson stated during a Zoom call with reporters. “I really liked the Tigers and watched them throughout 2024 and 2025 as they reached the playoffs. I believe this year could see further playoff progress.”
Despite hopes, the season has diverged from expectations. The Tigers have dropped 21 of their last 25 games, holding a 22-38 record, the worst in the American League. According to FanGraphs, only the Kansas City Royals and Los Angeles Angels have lower postseason chances in the AL.
As the August 3 trade deadline approaches, Anderson becomes an attractive target for teams seeking relief pitching. Although not replicating his ace performance in Korea, where he achieved a 12-7 record, a 2.25 ERA, and 245 strikeouts in 171.2 innings with the SSG Landers, Anderson remains promising. He outperforms Cody Ponce, who has faced injuries with the Toronto Blue Jays after a successful season in Korea. Only Anthony Kay of the Chicago White Sox, with a 5-1 record and 3.77 ERA after playing in Japan, rivals him among American returnees in 2026.
If traded, Anderson could aid the Tigers in strengthening their roster for 2027 and beyond with minimal impact on this year’s results. Should their current performance persist, the Tigers may soon focus on future prospects.
