Tragic Fire in Islamabad Hospital Nursery Claims 14 Newborn Lives

A devastating fire in the nursery of Pakistan Institute of Medical Sciences, located in Islamabad, resulted in the tragic deaths of 14 newborns. This government hospital’s nursery, situated within the gynecology ward, held 15 newborns when the fire erupted.

The incident occurred around 6:45 a.m. Rescue efforts managed to save at least one infant. Initial reports suggest the fire was triggered by the explosion of an air-conditioning unit’s compressor housed within the nursery.

Images captured the raw emotion of affected families, such as a mother mourning outside the Mother and Child Health ward after losing her child in this tragedy.

According to local media, firefighters responded swiftly, quenching the blaze, while rescue teams continued cooling operations to prevent any further incidents. However, the hospital spokesperson remained unreachable for comment when contacted by The Associated Press.

In the aftermath of the catastrophe, Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif expressed deep sorrow over the loss of young lives. He called for a comprehensive investigation to determine the cause and culpability for this tragic event. The Prime Minister’s office confirmed the passing of these 14 infants.

“A tragedy involving children is an irreparable loss,” Prime Minister Sharif stated. He urged that the incident’s circumstances undergo thorough review to identify those accountable, advising that the strictest punishments be enforced.
