Canadian officials have confirmed both fatalities and injuries following a severe incident that led to a significant fire at one of the country’s busiest military bases on Saturday. The incident occurred at Canadian Forces Base Wainwright in Alberta, a crucial Army training site.
Defense Minister David McGuinty addressed the situation, expressing sorrow over the tragic outcome. While he did not specify the exact number of casualties or injuries, he acknowledged the gravity of the situation. “I’m saddened to share that there have been both fatalities and injuries as a result of an incident on the base,” McGuinty stated in a press briefing.
Prime Minister Mark Carney extended his condolences in light of the event. The fire, which remained active into Saturday evening, has been described by McGuinty as unprecedented in recent memory. Wainwright’s municipality noted that the fire had spread beyond the base’s boundaries, impacting the surrounding areas, but no evacuation orders were issued.
On social media, Alberta Premier Danielle Smith described the situation as a “significant and tragic fire” impacting military personnel. Both the Canadian Armed Forces and the Royal Canadian Mounted Police, along with local emergency services, are responding to the crisis, as reported by the Canadian Broadcasting Corporation (CBC).
McGuinty assured that the Department of National Defence, Canadian Armed Forces, and other federal partners are coordinating efforts with Alberta’s government and municipal authorities to provide all necessary assistance.
The base, situated around 130 miles east of Edmonton, housed about 1,310 military and civilian staff in 2021, according to Reuters. The town of Wainwright, in close proximity to the base, holds a population of roughly 6,600 residents.
As of now, the cause of the incident remains uncertain.
