On Sunday, Tropical Storm Moke moved past Hawaii, affecting Big Island communities still recovering from Hurricane Lala. Located around 320 miles south-southwest of Hilo by midday, Moke had sustained winds of 40 mph. However, heavy rainfall posed a greater risk to areas already flooded by the previous hurricane. Two deaths have been reported linked to Hurricane Lala in Hawaii.
Hawaii County Mayor Kimo Alameda advised residents to avoid roads and shelter in place. Shelters were available for those in need. Rainfall predictions suggested up to 10 inches across the Big Island, with isolated areas receiving up to 15 inches, potentially causing dangerous flooding and mudslides. Eastern Maui expected up to 6 inches of rain, while other islands might receive between 1 to 2 inches.
The Big Island was expected to face the greatest impact of Moke’s rain and winds. Hurricane Lala had previously resulted in significant rainfall, with northeast Big Island recording 43.54 inches. Governor Josh Green encouraged residents to prepare essentials like food and medicine. Over 6,500 customers remained without power due to Hurricane Lala’s impact.
Additionally, Tropical Storm Iselle formed in the eastern Pacific, distant from Mexico’s southwest coast. With winds reaching 50 mph, Iselle was situated about 535 miles southwest of Mexico’s Baja California peninsula. It was expected to intensify to a hurricane in the coming days, potentially affecting Baja’s western coastline with strong ocean swells starting Monday.
