Trump Administration Shifts State Department Priorities, Moves Away from Biden-Era DEIA Guidelines

The State Department under President Donald Trump is moving away from guidelines set during the Biden administration that focused on promoting Diversity, Equity, Inclusion, and Accessibility (DEIA) to foreign officials. According to State Department spokesperson Tommy Pigott, these guidelines will no longer be a priority for America’s diplomats, who are now tasked with advocating for the country’s national interests on the international stage.

Documents from the previous administration, as obtained by Fox News, indicated that employees were encouraged to integrate DEIA issues into discussions with foreign counterparts. Topics included social inclusion, racial and gender equity, disability matters, and LGBTQI+ issues, even when such subjects were controversial in the host countries.

Under Biden’s leadership, the adherence to DEIA policies played a role in official assessments and promotions within the State Department. This focus has shifted under Trump, with such criteria no longer influencing job performance reviews.

The previous guidelines emphasized ‘allyship,’ encouraging staff to address biases affecting inclusivity. Employees were urged to actively engage in breaking down biases related to race, ethnicity, gender, LGBTQI+, and disability, as well as biases within the State Department workforce. Staff were also expected to take initiative to educate themselves about DEIA, instead of relying on marginalized groups for this education.

The Biden-era policies also required Front Offices to support or create a DEIA Council, emphasizing the importance of discussing and mitigating bias within the mission and in interactions with the host nation. It pushed for the development of localized DEIA trainings to include all job categories and created channels for those sometimes excluded from senior staff interactions to share ideas.

State Department spokesperson Tommy Pigott highlighted the transition under Trump, stating the department is refocusing its efforts on diplomacy rather than engaging in political agendas. The reforms aim to prioritize merit, emphasize practical diplomatic skills, and equip diplomats to tackle the most pressing challenges facing the United States.

The shift reflects the Trump administration’s broader approach to refocus the State Department’s mission to align with traditional diplomatic goals, moving away from what has been termed ‘woke’ initiatives by critics.
