President Trump has once again involved himself in a foreign election, this time by endorsing a right-wing candidate in Colombia’s presidential race. On Tuesday night, Trump expressed his support for Abelardo De La Espriella, who advanced to the second round of the election in June. De La Espriella will compete against Iván Cepeda, a candidate from the party of the current left-wing president, Gustavo Petro.
In a post on Truth Social, Trump congratulated De La Espriella, affectionately referring to him by his campaign nickname, “El Tigre,” or the Tiger. Trump praised De La Espriella’s accomplishments and political support for him, declaring his complete endorsement. Trump emphasized the importance of this election’s outcome for Colombia’s future relationship with the United States.
De La Espriella expressed gratitude for Trump’s “decisive support,” promising to enhance ties between the United States and Colombia. He stated, “It’s fundamental to understand that the United States is decisive to fight crime, narcoterrorism, and liberate Colombia once and for all from so much pain and so much violence.”
Consistent with his approach in other Latin American elections, Trump portrayed De La Espriella’s rival, Iván Cepeda, as a “Radical Left Marxist.” Cepeda’s campaign has yet to respond to Trump’s comments.
