In January 2026, the administration declared an indefinite halt to visa processing for nationals from 75 countries. This decision is part of a broader set of immigration restrictions that have been introduced since Trump took office again.
State Department spokesperson Tommy Pigott explained that the visa freeze was aimed at individuals deemed likely to become a ‘public charge.’ This term refers to those expected to rely on government benefits for basic needs.
A federal court intervened in August, overturning the visa freeze. During the same period, the administration also announced a temporary stop to immigrant visa appointments worldwide. This pause was implemented for consular officer training purposes. However, it is anticipated that visa appointments will resume by early to mid-September.
