Trump’s Use of Taiwan Arms Sales as a Bargaining Tool

1 month ago 0

President Trump’s decision to delay a $14 billion arms package to Taiwan benefits China. This move provides Chinese leaders, including Xi Jinping, with an opportunity to weaken Taiwan’s defense strategy.

China’s state media took advantage of Trump’s statements to communicate that the U.S. may not be a reliable ally for Taiwan. Taiwan’s President, Lai Ching-te, and the Democratic Progressive Party face new challenges without unwavering U.S. support. The Chinese newspaper, Global Times, highlighted this change by quoting a Chinese researcher.

Security cannot be bought with military purchases; if you become a pawn, you will only be squeezed dry.

Col. Jiang Bin, from China’s Ministry of National Defense, emphasized this point, directly addressing Taiwan’s situation.

The American president’s remarks were made public over the weekend following a summit with Xi in Beijing. Trump suggested that the weapons deal could serve as a negotiating tool with China.

I’m holding that in abeyance and it depends on China,

Trump stated during an interview with Fox News. The specifics of what Trump expects from China remain uncertain.
