Ukraine has launched a significant drone and missile attack on Russian targets, which Russian officials called the largest of the ongoing conflict. The strikes coincided with Russia’s parliamentary elections.
Zelenskyy’s Response to Russian Aggression
Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy expressed support for the strikes. He highlighted the impact on key Russian oil industry facilities, emphasizing their contribution to Russia’s war efforts.
“Tonight in the Moscow region, our long-range responses were felt very acutely,” wrote Zelenskyy on X. “These are billions of dollars that support the war machine.”
Zelenskyy also called for new sanctions from the U.S., Europe, and the G7 in response to Russian drone attacks on Ukraine.
Impact on Russian Parliamentary Elections
The attacks aligned with the final day of Russia’s parliamentary elections. Moscow Mayor Sergei Sobyanin noted significant drone activity aimed at disrupting the elections, though he claimed the attacks were repelled.
The Russian Ministry of Defense reported neutralizing over 1,100 Ukrainian drones, including those targeting Crimea and the Black Sea areas. Damage occurred at the Moscow Oil Refinery and a residential area.
Escalation in Conflict
Zelenskyy urged for de-escalation, proposing energy and food security as potential areas. He thanked allies enhancing Ukraine’s defense capabilities.
“I am grateful to everyone who complements our long-range responses with responses through sanctions,” he stated.
Attacks in Ukraine
In Ukraine, Russian drone strikes continue. One attack in Kherson hit a monastery, resulting in casualties. Another in Kyiv led to the death of three children and their mother.
The drone strikes by Ukraine were timed with Russia holding elections, including in disputed regions and Crimea.
Putin’s Reaction
President Vladimir Putin accused Ukraine of electoral interference. He claimed a Ukrainian strike in Zaporizhzhia killed an election official. He addressed the nation, affirming support for Russian forces in Ukraine.
