With the start of the NFL season approaching, the Kansas City Chiefs face uncertainty regarding their star quarterback, Patrick Mahomes. Just weeks before their initial game against the Denver Broncos on “Monday Night Football,” team officials remain unsure if Mahomes will be ready to play.
Chiefs’ head coach Andy Reid communicated to reporters that Mahomes’ recovery appears positive, yet he refrains from confirming his availability. “He’s doing great,” Reid remarked. “We’re taking it day by day. Predictions are not available at this point. If medical personnel give him the all-clear, and he feels ready, we’ll address it then.”
Mahomes repeatedly expressed his anticipation to participate in Week 1 throughout the offseason. Having suffered an ACL injury in Week 15 last season, his return would signify a nine-month recovery period, considered swift for such injuries.
Despite concerns about potential rust in Mahomes’ performance upon his return, Hall of Fame quarterback Drew Brees expressed confidence in Mahomes’ capabilities. “Physiologically, Mahomes is fine,” Brees told TMZ. “He needs to overcome the mental challenge and believe in his readiness to perform. I’m convinced his best days are ahead.”
Brees’ optimistic view considers Mahomes will be just recovering from surgery and the Chiefs facing wide receiver challenges. Analysts suggest Mahomes will need exceptional performance for another Super Bowl appearance.
Last season, Mahomes achieved 3,587 passing yards, 22 touchdowns, and 11 interceptions before his injury. Offensive Coordinator Eric Bieniemy returns, reinstated after previously leading some of Mahomes’ best seasons.
