The Tampa Bay Buccaneers are finding success through unconventional means against the Carolina Panthers. At halftime, the Bucs held a commanding 33-6 lead. Notably, eight of their points were scored in surprising ways.
The unusual scoring began with cornerback Zyon McCullom securing a defensive two-point conversion. Later, defensive tackle Calijah Kancey, weighing 280 pounds, returned a fumble for a touchdown.
Let’s explore Kancey’s impressive score first. The Buccaneers’ defense pressured the Panthers’ offense, which led to Al-Quadin Muhammad strip-sacking Carolina’s quarterback, Bryce Young. Kancey capitalized on the opportunity by recovering the loose ball and running 32 yards to the end zone. He then completed the score with an athletic flip over the goal line.
While Kancey’s play was notable, McCullom’s two-point conversion was even more extraordinary. After a 50-yard pass from Bryce Young to tight end Darren Waller reduced Tampa Bay’s lead to 17-6, McCullom seized a blocked extra point attempt. He then returned it for two more points for the Bucs.
Additionally, McCullom had a strong defensive performance by intercepting a pass from Young in the first half. Despite Tampa Bay’s last-place standing in the NFC South with a 1-5 record, Baker Mayfield, after recovering from a thumb injury, returned to start the game.
Mayfield connected with Tez Johnson for a touchdown pass, contributing to the Bucs’ 33-6 halftime lead. The 33 points in the first half marked the third-highest in the team’s history and the most since 2021.
The Carolina Panthers, who led the NFC South with a 3-2 record before the game, found themselves challenged by the Bucs’ unexpected scoring methods.
