The USS Abraham Lincoln has arrived in Thailand after an extensive 286-day mission in the Middle East, including 250 days without a port stop. The Nimitz-class aircraft carrier anchored near Pattaya, located on the east coast of the Gulf of Thailand, roughly 100 kilometers south of Bangkok. The visit offers over 5,000 sailors an opportunity to enjoy the city during a “liberty port call,” following challenging conditions on board, such as supply shortages and plumbing issues. Despite reports of a mental health crisis leading to attempted suicides, the Navy refuted these claims.

Importance of U.S.-Thailand Relations

Rear Admiral Robert E. Loughran, commanding the Lincoln’s carrier strike group, emphasized the significance of the visit. “Our arrival in Laem Chabang allows our sailors and Marines to rest and recharge,” he stated, highlighting the enduring alliance between the United States and Thailand. Thai authorities and businesses also view the visit as economically and politically beneficial. The government’s public relations office assured a “warm welcome” from Pattaya, while a local business owner expressed enthusiasm at witnessing another generation of American sailors.

Pattaya’s Attractions

Pattaya is renowned for its beach resorts, nightlife, and sex tourism, although efforts have been made to reshape its image away from being “Thailand’s sin city.” The U.S. military has played a key role in Pattaya’s economic growth since the 1960s, transforming it into a popular tourist destination due to its proximity to Sattahip naval base and U-Tapao airfield during the Vietnam War.

Economic Impact of the Visit

Local officials anticipate that the visit could stimulate Pattaya’s economy, which faced declining international arrivals this summer. Sutharat Wangdee, managing director of PattayaCentral.com, voiced her excitement in welcoming the USS Abraham Lincoln’s crew. She indicated that the event would benefit a wide range of sectors, including accommodation, dining, transport, entertainment, and small businesses. Her company increased staff, confident in the professional conduct of the visiting U.S. servicemen and women.

A representative from the Hard Rock Hotel in Pattaya echoed this optimism. The influx of U.S. sailors is expected to support various tourism-related businesses throughout Pattaya. Local media report estimates from Pattaya’s mayor, suggesting spending of 1,000 to 3,000 Thai baht per American visitor, totaling around 15 million baht or $450,000. The Thai Enquirer projected spending could reach up to 100 million baht or $3 million, factoring in expenditures on accommodation, dining, leisure, and transportation.

Preparations and Security Concerns

To manage the influx, Pattaya authorities have bolstered security, deploying approximately 600 officials for public safety and traffic control. Heightened patrols in busy districts aim to regulate prostitution and prevent businesses from overcharging visitors. Certain areas like Pattaya’s red-light district also restrict access for Navy personnel.

The Thai government reassured city readiness in a public statement, encouraging visitors to enjoy Pattaya’s beaches, culture, and hospitality, further indicating appreciation for the USS Abraham Lincoln’s visit.
