A 17-year-old lacrosse player from Washington has passed away following a tragic event during a game. Eliot Abramson, a midfielder from Mercer Island High School near Seattle, was participating in a college recruitment showcase on June 1 when he was struck by a lacrosse ball at the base of his neck.
At 6-foot-2, Abramson had been actively involved in Mercer Island lacrosse since elementary school. The incident occurred when the ball slipped under the back edge of his helmet during a regular play.
Witnesses reported that Eliot immediately lost consciousness and collapsed on the field. He was quickly taken to Harborview Medical Center in Seattle for emergency surgery.
Abramson spent nearly a week in intensive care before he passed away on June 7, confirmed by school officials and family members.
His mother, Jessica Abramson-Lott, expressed her grief and shed light on his connection with his late biological father, Josef Abramson, who had died when Eliot was three years old. She shared, “While Eliot’s time on earth will end way too soon, we are comforted that he will be in heaven with his dad, making him laugh and playing music. We believe he’ll be doing ‘wall ball’ in the sky and cheering for all his friends.”
This marks the second similar death of a high school athlete in a year. Last year, 16-year-old Ohio lacrosse player Dylan Veselic died after a comparable injury.
