USA Sports revealed on Saturday that Game 6 of the WNBA Finals amassed an average viewership of 1.5 million on Thursday afternoon. This number is particularly striking because the game’s start time, 12:30 p.m. Eastern, translated to 9:30 a.m. in the Golden State Valkyries’ local market.
This second-highest viewership on cable did surpass last year’s championship game broadcast during prime-time by 4%, according to USA Sports. Viewership figures aggregated television audiences from USA Network, E!, and SYFY alongside streaming led by Peacock. However, breakdowns of these audience figures between TV and streaming remained undisclosed.
Streaming and Measurement Challenges
The high ratings for the WNBA Finals have been proudly reported by NBC Sports and USA Sports. WNBA PR also disseminated their data through an NBA employee. Notably, NBC reported a 2.1 million viewership for Game 1, branding it the highest audience for a Finals opener.
Game 3 achieved a viewership of 1.71 million, noted as the biggest audience since 1999 and the highest on cable to date. Additionally, NBC posted Game 4 as the most-watched Game 4 in WNBA Finals history, with 1.9 million viewers across NBC and Peacock. This showed a 14% increase from the previous 1.67 million record set by ESPN in 2024.
It’s important to note the context of these comparisons, as ESPN is a subscription-based service, whereas NBC is freely available, alongside Peacock for streaming. NBC’s television audience measured 1.66 million, a minor drop from the previous ESPN record, but NBC incorporated additional figures from Adobe Analytics for streaming audiences.
Nielsen Measurement Adjustments
Nielsen has made significant adjustments to their measurement methods. In 2025, they adopted the Big Data + Panel standard, blending household panel data with smart TV and set-top box information from millions of households. They’re also accounting for out-of-home viewing measurements, expanding coverage from 66% to the full contiguous U.S. television population.
These changes aim to enhance accuracy without guaranteeing higher audience ratings. However, capturing viewership remains vital in reflecting existing fans rather than new ones.
Other Games and Viewer Trends
Game 5’s viewership was touted at 1.4 million from USA Network, CNBC, and Peacock platforms, branded as the second-most-watched Finals Game 5. Although it fell short compared to the 2024 Liberty-Lynx game viewership of 2.15 million on ESPN by about 35%. It’s also essential to note the 2024 Finals were a winner-take-all format, making comparisons different for this year’s expanded best-of-seven system.
Streaming Verification
The assertion of streaming audience sizes based on Adobe Analytics hasn’t been independently verified within releases. Adobe details their audience calculation as time spent watching divided by the program’s duration, plus client-specific reporting preferences.
NBC hasn’t clarified how their streaming data matches television metrics, despite citing them in their releases. Similarly, USA Sports changed the Nielsen data source for specific game measurements. Their releases largely involved Nielsen Big Data + Panel or Adobe Analytics, showing potential estimation through preliminary data.
Game Scheduling and Viewer Strategy
Game 6’s scheduling was adjusted to a noon start at State Farm Arena due to the Hawks playing later that evening. This scheduling avoided overlap with ‘Thursday Night Football.’ Coordinated promotional efforts by WNBA, NBA, and broadcasters aimed to direct viewers to this time slot.
Overall, with USA Sports expressing confidence in their figures, they should clarify whether ratings are definitive and specify audiences from cable versus streaming.
