During the 2026 midterm elections, voters in six states participated in a busy primary election day. Polls closed with notable developments across these states.
Kentucky
In Kentucky, President Trump’s influence was evident as Rep. Thomas Massie, who did not fully support Trump’s agenda, was defeated. Voter concerns highlighted rising gas prices, affordability issues, and the ongoing conflict in Iran alongside the Trump administration’s management of these problems.
Alabama
Following a recent Supreme Court decision, Alabama’s primary elections faced changes. Redistricting caused confusion, leading to rescheduled primaries for several congressional districts. The gubernatorial race set Republican Sen. Tommy Tuberville against former Democratic Sen. Doug Jones as they vie to succeed term-limited Republican Gov. Kay Ivey.
Georgia
Georgia’s primaries featured record-breaking fundraising and significant Democratic turnout. State officials identified 53% of ballots from Democrats. Key races are headed to runoffs, including the Republican challenge to incumbent Democratic Sen. Jon Ossoff, a critical contest. In the governor’s race, Rick Jackson and Burt Jones will meet in a June 16 runoff, with Keisha Lance Bottoms nominated outright for the Democrats.
Idaho
All legislative seats were on Idaho’s ballot, along with major U.S. House races. For detailed results, Boise State Public Radio provides a comprehensive election blog.
Kentucky Continued
Rep. Andy Barr secured the Republican nomination backed by Trump, while Rep. Thomas Massie lost to Ed Gallrein with Trump’s endorsement. The state, which has not seen a Democrat in Senate representation for over 25 years, is positioning for a challenge against Sen. Mitch McConnell.
Oregon
Oregon’s voters nominated gubernatorial candidates and decided against statewide gas taxes. Christine Drazan and Tina Kotek will face off in a rematch for the gubernatorial position. Previous elections saw Kotek winning with 47% support.
Pennsylvania
Pennsylvania’s competitive primaries could sway House control. The Democratic primary for Philly’s 3rd Congressional District highlighted differences over Gaza and fundraising. Progressive insurgent Chris Rabb emerged victorious. Three Republican-held seats, deemed toss-ups, add intensity to primary outcomes.
