Political Implications of Continued U.S.-Iran Conflict for Iowa Senate Candidate

3 weeks ago 0

Rep. Ashley Hinson, a Republican candidate for the Iowa Senate, recently spoke about the potential political ramifications of the ongoing conflict between the U.S. and Iran. During a campaign event in Fort Dodge, Iowa, on May 28, Hinson privately expressed concerns over how the conflict might affect her campaign if it persisted for several weeks.

Hinson’s remarks, captured in audio obtained by CBS News, highlighted the loss of Iowa soldiers in the conflict as a significant concern. ‘I hope we can resolve this in the next few weeks,’ she stated. ‘If it continues, it becomes a political liability because of our lost soldiers from Iowa.’

She elaborated on her concerns, mentioning the funerals of four Iowa service members she attended since December. ‘It’s terrible,’ Hinson noted.

When questioned about a timeline for the war, Hinson deferred to President Trump and his foreign policy team, who are negotiating with Iran to extend the ceasefire and discuss its nuclear program. She emphasized the importance of preventing Iran from acquiring a nuclear weapon, saying, ‘Iran cannot have a nuclear weapon. That’s my stance.’

Regarding a potential military draft, Hinson stated she hadn’t heard of any plans for one and reflected on the White House’s previous assertion that a draft was not on the horizon. ‘We don’t need one,’ she added, expressing her hopes for avoiding such measures.

Despite the potential political challenges and the grief faced by families of fallen soldiers, Hinson conveyed that those families remain committed to finishing the conflict’s resolution. ‘They all feel we must complete the job, even in their sorrow,’ she shared.

Hinson will compete against Democrat Josh Turek for the Iowa Senate seat that Republican Sen. Joni Ernst will vacate, as Ernst is not seeking re-election. This race is a critical battle that could influence the balance of power in the Senate in 2026.

A spokesperson for Hinson emphasized the unpopularity of prolonged conflicts and expressed confidence in President Trump’s efforts to avoid such situations while safeguarding American citizens.
