AOC Calls for Time to Review Allegations Against Maine Senate Candidate Graham Platner

3 weeks ago 0

Rep. Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez, D-N.Y., has expressed the need for time to thoroughly assess recent reports about Maine Senate candidate Graham Platner. New allegations of aggressive behavior have emerged, prompting Ocasio-Cortez to refrain from commenting until she has reviewed the information in detail.

Ocasio-Cortez stated, “This all kind of just came out. I’ve been doing legislative business on the floor, so I need to dig into everything further before commenting on it.” Her caution follows a report by The New York Times detailing experiences from several women who had past romantic relationships with Platner.

These accounts include allegations of rape fantasies, excessive drinking, and violent incidents. Platner, acknowledging his past struggles, stated he battled undiagnosed PTSD from his military service. He admitted to self-medicating with alcohol during a challenging period in his life and described himself as far from an ideal partner.

Lyndsey Fifield, an ex-girlfriend, recounted an incident where Platner reportedly pushed her into a bedroom and twisted her arm, locking her in the room. She eventually left after falling asleep and waking up later.

Fifield shared that Platner fantasized about harming people he considered threats. She also mentioned his chest tattoo of a Totenkopf, associated with Nazi death camp guards, which Platner reportedly justified by drawing parallels between his military unit and the Schutzstaffel.

Ocasio-Cortez, despite sharing progressive ideals with Platner, has yet to endorse his Senate bid against Sen. Susan Collins, R-Maine.

The controversies surrounding Platner have raised questions about his candidacy. His comments on sexual abuse and race, as well as the Nazi-associated tattoo, have drawn criticism. Platner also faces allegations of inappropriate communication with women outside his marriage.

A resurfaced Reddit post showed Platner blaming rape victims for not protecting themselves, saying, “How about people just take some responsibility for themselves and not so f—ed up when they wind up having sex with someone they don’t mean to?”

The Democratic candidate seeking to challenge Sen. Susan Collins has admitted to sending sexual messages to women after marrying his wife, adding to the scrutiny of his campaign.

Despite the controversies, Platner is positioned to secure the Democratic nomination for the Maine Senate race. He has met with senators to assure them of his qualifications for the candidacy. Maine’s Senate primaries are scheduled for next Tuesday.
