California Primary Election Overview

3 weeks ago 0

Gubernatorial Race Leads

Republican Steve Hilton is ahead in the California governor’s race, followed closely by Democrat Xavier Becerra, according to the latest election returns. With about 27% of votes for Hilton and 26% for Becerra, the competition is tight, and millions of ballots still need to be counted. Tom Steyer, the Democratic candidate, trails with 20%. The Californian primary system advances the top two candidates, regardless of party, to the general election in November.

Hilton urged mobilization of state resources to speed up ballot counting, referring to the slow process as “shameful.” He compared California’s ballot counting unfavorably to India’s rapid election processes.

The governor’s office clarified that ballot counting falls under the jurisdiction of local election officials, not the governor.

Los Angeles Mayoral Competition

Los Angeles City Councilmember Nithya Raman is closing the gap with Spencer Pratt, a reality TV personality, in the race for the second spot in the mayoral runoff against incumbent Mayor Karen Bass. Raman is behind by about 3 percentage points. The results are expected to be finalized soon, with Mayor Karen Bass already advancing to the November election.

Views on Election Delays

President Trump made unfounded claims regarding election fraud in California, alleging that Democrats are “cheating” in the primary elections. He also criticized the slow vote counting process, similar to Hilton’s concerns.

California law allows ballots to be mailed by election day and counted if received within seven days post-election.

California’s vote-by-mail system requires manual signature verification, contributing to slower final results.

Education and State Treasurer Contests

Republican Sonja Shaw and Democrat Richard Barrera are advancing to the November runoff for state schools superintendent. Shaw leads the primary with 24.5% of votes. In the race for state treasurer, Democratic Lt. Gov. Eleni Kounalakis and Republican Jennifer Hawks have secured positions for the general election.

Kounalakis, endorsed by well-known personalities including Gov. Gavin Newsom, aims to transition from her lieutenant governor role to treasurer.

Data Centers Ban in Monterey Park

Monterey Park residents voted overwhelmingly to ban data centers within city limits, becoming the first U.S. city to do so by public vote. With 86% in favor, the ban follows resistance against a data center proposal by HMC StratCap.

Conclusion

The completion of ballot counting in California is awaited, with key races still undecided and outcomes likely to influence political landscapes significantly. Patience is urged as the process continues. Federal investigations into election fraud claims remain unconfirmed.
