Los Angeles Mayor Karen Bass declared an emergency on Saturday, aiming to secure necessary resources to combat a significant warehouse fire. The fire has released large smoke plumes into the air.
Mayor Bass stated, “The city and county have opened spaces for families seeking relief from the smoke, and we will continue working around the clock and doing everything possible to put this fire out completely.” The emergency declaration sought to facilitate resource acquisition to effectively tackle the situation.
The fire erupted on Wednesday at a privately owned cold-storage warehouse in Boyle Heights. Due to the risk of hazardous air, shelter-in-place orders were issued. Residents were advised to close windows, doors, and vents, switch off air conditioning, and gather people and pets in an interior room.
Los Angeles Fire Department Chief Jaime Moore discussed efforts to manage the blaze’s complex challenges at a news conference. “We have 85 million pounds of frozen food inside of this facility and the way the building has been laid out, it’s very difficult for us to get in there because there’s zero visibility inside,” Moore explained, indicating the complications of accessing the premises safely.
The mayor’s declaration requests recovery support under the California Disaster Assistance Act, while also urging the state to expedite resource access and relief programs. Mayor Bass emphasized the priority being the health and safety of those affected by the fire, aiming to remove and dispose of toxic materials to prevent environmental harm.
