Who are the individuals powering the global scam industry? In Cambodia, authorities have freed over 200,000 workers from secured facilities. Many of these individuals were trafficked, held captive, and compelled to work under oppressive conditions for minimal compensation. Recently, the Cambodian government’s intensified crackdown has allowed reporters a deeper insight into this industry, which has defrauded Americans of at least $20 billion by 2025.
But what routes led these workers to Cambodia, and what promises enticed them? In this two-part series for The Sunday Story, investigative journalist Shibani Mahtani explores the secretive network of the global scam industry. She follows the journey of a Ugandan man who ventured far in pursuit of an opportunity that appeared too promising to resist.
This episode’s production for The Sunday Story was managed by Justine Yan, with editing by Jenny Schmidt. Jimmy Keeley provided audio engineering support.
