School Shooting in the Philippines Leaves Three Dead

2 days ago 0

In the central Philippines, a tragic event unfolded when two students, aged 14 and 15, opened fire at San Jose National High School in Tacloban city. The incident occurred on a Monday morning, resulting in the deaths of three students and injuries to seven others, according to Brig. Gen. Jason Capoy, the regional police chief.

The suspects were quickly apprehended by police. Both attackers attended the same school, which has over 1,500 students, and were believed to have been close friends. Initial questioning revealed claims of bullying as a potential motive for the shooting.

The firearms involved included a 9 mm pistol obtained from an aunt, a police officer under investigation, and a cal. 38 revolver registered to a Cebu City-based security agency, as reported by the Reuters news agency.

The lack of adequate security was highlighted by Capoy due to only one guard overseeing numerous entrances and exits. This insufficiency enabled the suspects to smuggle the weapons onto the school grounds.

Surveillance revealed the suspects infiltrated two classrooms, targeting students, predominantly females, before fleeing. Police recovered at least 40 shell casings from the scene.

President Ferdinand Marcos Jr. called for a comprehensive investigation and increased security measures in educational and public institutions, as stated by Communications Undersecretary Claire Castro.

In the aftermath of the incident, one suspect was immediately captured within the school, while the other was located in a nearby residence following community reports.

Given their minor status, the suspects will be transferred to government welfare services post-investigation. Underage individuals, like the 14-year-old suspect, cannot face criminal charges under Philippine law unless authorities assess a clear understanding of the crime committed.

Shooting incidents involving firearms are not uncommon in the Philippines due to widespread possession of unlicensed guns. However, school shootings are rare in the country. A notable incident in 2022 involved a gunman at a university in Manila, leading to multiple fatalities, which included a former town mayor. The perpetrator was arrested following the event.
